Subject Search Guidelines
The letters of Dr. James Carmichael and Son are thoroughly analyzed to provide metadata rich with fifteen searchable categories. These subject categories link to lists of items specifically related to each subject or, in the case of subjects with a smaller number of letters, directly to the letters themselves. This method of classification highlights the strengths of the collection. Each letter is assigned to at least one subject.
The medical content of the letters is divided into complaints and diseases, treatments, and instruments using the original language of the Carmichael letters. To search for all topics in the controlled vocabulary of the National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), select a topic under the Medical Subject Heading category. For more information about MeSH, including scope notes, go to: www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/2004/MBrowser.html.
