Dear. Edward.
Knowing that you feel deeply inter-
rested in the welfare of you pupils- Permit me to
have the pleasure of announcing to you, that
Minor and myself were examined on yesterday
and passed without a dissenting vote -- Mr. Blake
a young Gentleman from Washington, a fellow
student of ours, was su [mm]ond before the Board
on Tuesday, and very rigidly examined; when the
votes were taken, it was found to be against him -
Daridge and DeButts his friends used their in-
fluence without avail, Daridge left the Board.
and DeButts declaired that he would resign his
chair -- it was thought and reported that Blake
was rejected - the excitement which it created
amongst the candidates was great -- they were
adopting measures to put a stop to proceedings.
when fortunately for us and for the Institution

it was announced that a mistake had occured
in voting. Dr. Potter having unintentionally put
in a negative instead of an affirmative Ballot.
which was ascertained by personal application
to him - the affair is amicably adjusted, and
the examination proceeding smoothly -- Mis-
takes of a similar nature have occured several
times -- the number of the candidates is
about 70 -- Please present my best respects
to Mrs. Carmichael, [yo]ur Fathers family, and
the young Gentlemen of the shop - we shall
