CARMICHAEL: Erected to the memory of Dr. James
Carmichael By his family. Born in Glasgow,
Scotland on the 30th of November 1771 and
died in Fredericksburg on the 14th June, 1831,
in the 60th year of his life. James Daniel,
Edward Smith, Peter Gordon, and Harriet Ran-
dolph, infant children of James and Elizabeth
Carmichael. Elizabeth Hackley, Francis Taylor,
Wil'l Henry Taylor, infant children of Edward
H. and Sarah L. Carmichael.Dr. James Carmichael, his two sons, his
grandson, and his great-grandson, furnish
still another proof of our debt to Scotland.
These five doctors have added lustre to the
medical profession in this community. The
name is conspicuous among the members of
St. George's Church in 1816 and thereafter.
He mentions in his will his wife, who was
Elizabeth Hackley; his sons, Richard,
George and Edward, and his daughters, Ann,
Ellen and Janet, and the latter's husband,
Charles Goodwin. His executors were Wil-
liam I. Roberts and Thomas Seddon.

His son, Edward, married Sarah Taylor,
George French married Mary Carter Well-
ford, and Richard married Virginia Bernard.
His daughter, Ann, was the wife of Mr.
Hart, and Eleanor never married.[From
