Dear Sirs,
I started a letter to Mr. Joseph
Herndon's for you eight or ten days ago, but
not knowing when you will get it have
determined to avail myself of the present
opportunity by Mr. Ellis to repeat in sub-
stance the letter above referred to with some
additional information.My wife was taken with [the menses] about a fortnight ago.
After an interval of 6 weeks & 4 days. Her
[acute] pains were fully as great but not quite
so lasting as usual - but her sore pains
as She terms them i e the pains in the back
belly & legs following her acute ones have per-
haps been more lasting than common. She
has not been free of these pains since she
was unwell and cannot find relief
any where except on the bed. She has com
plained for several days of considerable pain

in the rectrum or fundament and also in the
vagina. She feels great pain there upon rising
from her seat.What is the cause I know not
She complains too almost constantly of pains
in her bowels & back. What is the cause
I know not unless it be the effect of the
medicine she is taking. It still keeps her
bowels very loose frequently in a laxative
state although she has never increased the
guaicum from one tea spoon full as I
could not think it advisable from its effect.

She has taken the electuary regularly with
the guaicum. [was that right?] She has had two chills
lately & constant fivers. She had a chill
this evening & at this time is very unwell,
with a burning fever & the above aches & pains
She has evidently been weakened by the
phystic and I have told her she must
lay it aside for a day or two till she
feels better - though she will persevere
in taking it if you still recommend it.

She has not more liquid than will last two
or three days. She expelled the deciduary
membrane in two pieces the last time she
was un well and almost as soon as
the menses began to flow freely. Heretofore
She has not lost it till about the fifth
day after being taken. This circumstance,
together with the shorter continuance of her
acute pains, excited a feeble hope in
my mind that her health was perhaps mending
but really her weakness & compl [unclear]
since have very much disheartened me.
She eats very little having no appetite &
the medicine moves her at least 3 times
every day. Perhaps the above effects are
such as you anticipated. We still pursue
any course you may prescribe.Yours
